The Welsh Corgi group includes two breeds, namely the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. The distinction between the two breeds dates back in the early 1920's. Up to this date, both the Pembrokes and the Cardigans were considered one single breed.

The two breeds share many common characteristics. Their appearance is almost the same, except for the presence of the tail. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi does not have a tail. The Cradigans have usually longer bodies than the Pembrokes. The Pembrokes are more sociable with people and other pets.

Both breeds brag with cleverness, so the Welsh Corgi dog training will be an easy thing to do. Both the Cardigans and the Pembrokes can be used as guard dogs, considering their alert temperament, and the fact that they will bark at strangers.

The Welsh Corgi does pretty well in an apartment and will be active indoors. Anyhow the Welsh Corgis love to run outdoors, so consider this fact when buying a Corgi.

How to Train the Welsh Corgi

The Welsh Corgi dog training can be based on obedience training. The basic commands of Sit, Come, Fetch etc. can be learned in a short period of time.

You may want to take advantage of the fact that the Welsh Corgis want to please their owners at any cost. So you may use this while training the Corgis.

In some cases, especially the Cardigans tend to be dominant, so make sure they understand your leading role.

The Welsh Corgi dog training will have to include a lot of socialization, due to the aggressive tendency of this breed. If not socialized from early puppy hood, the Welsh Corgis will become overprotective of their owners.

The Corgis may become aggressive towards other male dogs, so prevent that by socializing your dog with other dogs.

Welsh Corgi dog training may include some lessons that will teach the dog how to become a therapy dog. The Welsh Corgi, if properly trained, has the excellent qualities of a therapy dog.
